1.1. Architectural and Structural Design, Designated Purpose

Daysailer planing motorboat with outboard motor and fiberglass hull. A boat is designed to undertake short journeys and recreation, to go fishing or towing a water skier, or for the rent service at boating stations.  

1.2. Certification. Rules and Regulations

A boat is certified by Shipping Register of Ukraine and has Class Certificate KM+[0]PЗ4Т2GLS/prog in accordance with “Guidelines for classification and construction of small vessels”, Kiev, 2004.

1.3. Navigation Area

Navigation area – 4th coastal:

Zone 3 of inland waterways – without restrictions in distance from the place of refuge  (with a wave height of 0,6 m with 5 per cent probability and the wind – not more than force 4);     

The nearshore zone of intercontinental sea, Zones 1 and 2 of inland waterways with a launch offshore proceeding not more than 1 km where navigation is restricted by a wave height of 0,6 m with 5 per cent probability and the wind – not more than force 4.  

1.4. Stability and Subdivision

Boat stability complies with requirements of “Rules…” of Shipping Register of Ukraine for the navigation area mentioned.

Boat subdivision is provided by buoyancy elements.


2.1. Hull shape

Motorboat shape has flat-deadrise planing hull lines with crossover sponson and water gripping sponsons on each side. Deadrise angle on the transform – 13º, on the middle - 16º.

2.2. Hull Construction

Structural elements of boat hull are made of glass-fibre material based on a polyester resin reinforced binder.

Constructively the hull consists of two sections pasted together along side flange.

Construction, dimensions of coupling elements and hull construction materials are accepted in accordance with requirements of “Rules…” of Shipping Register of Ukraine.

For manufacturing of boat hull the imported vinyl ethereal / polyester resin and glass materials of high-quality are used.

The engine is fixed on a transom by crab bolt.

The engine is fixed on a handle bracket by standard engine clamp.

In the height of season I was invited to test a boat KR 620 produced by KruzYacht LLC. Test venue was Kherson and a trip would take two or three days. It was difficult to take time off from my day job but knowing the origin of construction of this hull I agreed to attend....

What was the story?  By the way, this story lasted for a few years: one day, during regular Boat Show in Kiev the booklets with general performances of newly developed hull for outboard motor appeared. Hull abilities in its placement range under “burden” power capability of 150-300 hp, - as it was stated in this booklet, had amazed me, to say the least. What was that? Adventure, incompetence or realization of “super-project” - I couldn’t grip it. Owning the hull with such abilities it is easy to become the producer No 1 not only in Ukraine. All of that caught my interest.  Gingerly I dialled a telephone number and asked how I could see this beauty. I could hardly manage to learn that the project hadn’t been implemented but at the same time expected result of commercial success was already announced. Frankly speaking, I lost my interest at once, especially because of crossover sponson with air-feeding of sponson area existed in a project. More than one season is needed to wrap up such lines into the shape! In the far 2001 there was attempt to create RIB with crossover sponson. The project was implemented. A boat even ran a 24-hour race in Petersburg and finished second at class. The premier place wasn’t taken away by competitor but by attachment point of outboard motor to transom which had been repaired several times during the race. It seemed it was complete success, but as the journalists from “Power and Sail Boats” keenly spotted, the boat was notable for her “ragged” planing.  That was: hull speed was sufficient but hull behaved unstably – there were pitching and rolling motions. Such boat maneuvering is like an amusement ride. To cut the long story short, RIB with crossover sponson hasn’t been put into serial production. Then the events regarding the prototype of KR-620 (let’s call her so) moved very curiously and rapidly. A potential buyer took an interest in model development. The hull designer’s merchant talent made a daring decision to combine trial trip and boat’s delivery to the customer.  

Casually (and by the will of the customer) it happened to me to see everything. I should say that the first launching of any hull and especially planing one may bring many unpleasant surprises. After attempt to make the hull planing nobody wanted to discuss it. Instability of movement didn’t allow giving of full engine speed.  It didn’t happen through some flaws or incorrect engine installation, but as a matter of principle. Then I drew the conclusion: the hull needed to be deeply refined. Who could do it was a question because the producer announced that all petty defects had been corrected and there were no any problems at all.

Three years have passed.  I was invited to see a new hull. Very interesting! Especially because a conversation was not about any unique properties and more over, the conversation was with quite different people – a new designer, a new production line… The aim of serial production was felt everywhere. Besides of KR-620, a number of smaller hulls were produced. At that moment KR-620 was the company’s flagship, but enlarged KR-700 with the length 7,05 m, the state cabin and the possibility to install a sterndrived fix engine was coming soon. And the managers of “KruzYachts” intended to give the customer an opportunity to choose an engine and a propeller type. Another Kr-620 was under construction there, at the same place. The hull was lying bottom up and I had the opportunity to value the lines’ shape. It was a daring decision – to leave crossover sponson with impressive height! I’d never seen such thing before. Doubts crept into my mind, I started asking questions.

The designer answered with confidence, explained clearly what had been done and for what purpose. And I saw that the whole bottom between crossover sponson and transom had been remade.  Bottom was extended on each side of the transfom and had quite strong bend. The hull was designed very carefully. All angles of sponsons had quite minor constant radius, no any glueline defects and air hollows were detected. And then the main thing was left – what the water trial would show. 

The trial run was performed in ideal weather conditions: air temperature +30ºС, dead calm, sunny. My first impressions were the most favorable. A boat obeyed perfectly. At the beginning we sailed together, fuel tank (140-liter capacity) was filled fully. While I was becoming adjusted to the boat’s “character” in midrange engine flexibility, we reached the camera point. And then photographers demanded to realize the dynamics.

Having experience with M-150 OPTI I belted up, put my feet against the sole, firmly gripped the steering wheel and made the boat rushed forward. Running the fourth-fifth turn I still felt a boat completely remained under my control. Now about operational qualities: full power passage under different angles to the photographer, passage with listing to port and to starboard, turns at full speed with full rudder displacement, circulation under different operating speeds and with different loading conditions – all of that was done without any efforts. I even forgot I was belted up. All rudder displacements, attacks of standing waves at different angles, passage along and across the waves created by passing vessels were performed stately, very gravely, predictably.

A “wild mustang” was successfully tamed. Absolute motion stability made me a little irritated; I caught myself thinking: I should find something wrong!   But I struck out anyway. Even to take a blow to my cheekbone putting it to the edge of the board and waiting for an oblique wave. And if I had taken this blow I would have advised: it isn’t recommended to set such course for a wave direction!

On the strait direction, unencumbered, we succeeded to reach speed of 80 km/h (speedometer measurement) using the three-bladed steel propeller Solas with 19” of propeller pitch. Upon 6-men loading the speed decreased by 4 km/h only.  At full speed the boat was able to describe a circle with radius of not more than two hull lengths, without listing heavily, kicking and rocking.

Acceleration from stop was with the slight bow lifting, the hull began planing from 3000-3100 rpm, and maintenance of planing was possible on the level of 2700 rpm. At full speed the hull was quite indifferent to the engine trim button. I think essential speed and fuel-saving reserve was hidden there. My general impression from the trial run: this hull is able to carry 250hp outboard engine. Possibly, the steering with such engine will be quite different. But I’d like to finish my story about the crossover sponson. There were no any behavior peculiarities for all regimes. I expected that during circulation the sponson would be hitting against the water surface and it would has caused the kicks of the hull, but it didn’t happen. When you take a boat’s side view at full speed, it is seen that the bottom behind the sponson becomes filled with air. It means the resistance reduction of planing hull and this factor makes profit efficiency. The producer has rejected the idea of forced air supply into the after-sponson space, but curiously stylized air intakes along the boards where the signal blended in have been left from this idea.

Boat interior design looks good. Fore cockpit layout pretty proves its worth, but it is desirable

to hide the passage between cockpit by removable entrance panel settling it under the boat windscreen. While sailing, the current of air from the fore cockpit to the center cockpit causes the discomfort.  Sufficient amount of lockers are conducive to the rational use of interior spaces.

Producer’s pride – the boat windscreen – was manufactured with involvement of foreign partners. It looks and works perfectly. A boat - using automobile terms – has the full power accessories: a bilge pump, an echo sounder, a loud-speaker system, navigation lights. An accumulator battery is duplicated and has the possibility of commutation in parallel and, accordingly, of tripping of all users.

Audio system is completed with six (!) loudspeakers. It must be said that the audio system body is very “soft” and the loudspeakers sound as in a studio. But it isn’t due to acoustic insulation – it is quality and strength property. Though, the producer thinks that the hull weight 1300 kg is too high and there are about 200 kg of excess weight. It is quite possible, but I hope that after
weight “liposuction” nothing will be changed with audio system.
